Burnham-On-Sea World Paper Aeroplane Championship is a Flying Success

BURNHAM-ON-SEA, U.K. - June 20, 2016 - PRLog -- Yesterday hundreds of rookie pilots entered the 2nd World Paper Aeroplane Championship when Burnham-On-Sea high street was transformed into an airport for the day.

The event involved competitors creating a paper plane design from a single A4 sheet of paper, then taking turns to launch it down the makeshift high street runway. However, it was not all 'plane' sailing for the entrants, who had to contend not only with some dubious origami, but also a tricky, and very unpredictable wind with often hilarious results for the crowd as planes got stuck in doorways and on buildings.

The event attracted a fantastic cross section of age ranges with grandparents and parents entering alongside children.  There was also a great turnout from families with many using the event as a fun opportunity to celebrate father's day.

There were over 4200 throws recorded on the day, but the eventual winner, Sam Clement, from nearby East Huntspill blew the competition away with a staggering distance of 34.30 metres.

Following his win Sam said; "I was determined to win! I was sure my design could go the distance; I probably flew my paper plane over 20 times, but when it flew out over 30 metres I was over the moon. I am really pleased to have won today."

The new dimension of landing the paper aeroplane in a "golden square" to win a limited edition golden pilots badge kept many people with lesser throwing skills entertained with many having several attempts to achieve a successful landing.

The free event was organised by http://www.wackynation.com in conjunction with Burnham and Highbridge Town Council with the aim of promoting the town centre.

Town Centre Manager, Bev Milner Simonds told us;

"This is the second time we have hosted the event here and it was great to plan it to coincide with Father's Day. We had a lot of families taking part on their way to or from lunch out in the town centre. Many thanks to Wacky Nation for co-ordinating a really special day and for the time given by our loyal ground crew."

Sally Raynes from Wacky Nation, added: "This has been a great success and one of the busiest we have organised.  We hope it continues to grow and run in Burnham for many years to come."

As fun events go, this was certainly one of the least-Boeing!
