Is it bad to exercise when watching over your ketogenic diet?

 
LOS ANGELES - Aug. 9, 2016 - PRLog -- Having regular exercises is very vital for the human body, as experts have advised that most people should allot some time every week to hit the fitness gym and burn some fats. However, there are some people who are undergoing into a ketogenic diet, a food intake plan designed for those at risk of diabetes, and under insulin treatment. Because this diet requires more carbohydrate intake as weight loss is rapid when suffering from diabetes, is it bad to exercise when you have a ketogenic diet?

According to experts who have shared their insights on the website Live Strong, the answer to this question is in the middle of yes and no.

When a person is undergoing into a ketogenic diet, there is a goal to regulate ketone levels within the body and testing them using ketone test strips. The diet allows the body to perform ketosis. During this process, the blood becomes a medium for keto-acids to build up, which are then eliminated from the body through the kidneys. Experts advise that people who experience irregular heartbeat, fatigue and some dizziness will have to avoid exercises to avoid further complications.

However, it does not mean that you have to completely stop exercising at this point.

When you are on a ketogenic diet, there is an aim to build carbohydrates instead of burning them to facilitate the maintenance of the weight, since medical treatments such as insulin intake that go along the diet tend to lessen the person's weight. So, instead burning down carbohydrates, the advice is to burn down fats.

There are two types of exercises that can be performed in moderation while on a ketogenic diet: aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

"According to certified strength and conditioning specialist Lyle McDonald, performance during high-intensity exercise decreases for people on ketogenic diets," website Live Strong explained. "However, with adequate time to adapt to carbohydrate restriction – two to three weeks – near maximum performance is possible."

You can also perform anaerobic exercises such as weight training when on a ketogenic diet. These types of exercises are said to require carbohydrates as energy source, more than fats. Take in some fruits and whole grains when doing such exercises.
