By: The Ivy Legacy Foundation "For more than 20 years, we have given away more than a quarter-million dollars in scholarships to area college bound students," says Jacquelyn Washington, President of the Ivy Legacy Foundation. "By supporting this race, you will enable us to continue making a difference in the Greater Philadelphia community we serve through educational and cultural programs." The Ivy Legacy Foundation has set a goal of raising $50,000 through "Chasing a Dream 5K Run and 1Mile Walk" and its signature fundraiser event in November, "Philly's Men Are Cooking." The Ivy Legacy Foundation partners with local and national initiatives that focus on global impact, environmental ownership, family strengthening, and health promotion. Organizers hope the lower registration fees, and walk option will encourage families to participate and start this Fall focused on health and wellness. "Statistics reveal obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are chief health challenges facing African Americans," says Robyn Jones, M.D., and President of AKA's Rho Theta Omega Chapter. "The Chasing a Dream 5K Run and 1Mile Walk" are in line with Alpha Kappa Alpha's international initiatives promoting health and wellness in our community." Chasing a Dream is a family-friendly race that fits the Sorority's mission statement, and overall goals for the upcoming year. The Ivy Legacy Foundation seeks to bring the love of running and walking to enthusiasts as well as beginners. Chasing a Dream Co-chairs, Monica Miller-Bailey and Candice Richardson are experienced runners, and have inspired first timers to take health and wellness more seriously. "Over the summer we hosted weekly Couch to 5K training sessions," says Candice Richardson. "This program is a great way to prepare for and injury free race." "Couch to 5K is how most runners get started," says Monica Miller-Bailey. "It's addictive --- once you get started, it's hard to stop!"
