Orange County Filmmakers Broadcast Live from Shark Cage

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Nov. 1, 2016 - PRLog -- Laguna Beach filmmaker, "Drey" Stockert, has teamed up with ocean advocate, Dan Stetson, to bring great white sharks into classrooms across the country. Using several laptops and special underwater communication gear, the team was able to bring the underwater signal from 200 miles off the coast of Baja Mexico and into classrooms in Laguna Beach, Chicago and Boulder.  Stetson, who stepped down from his role as head of the Ocean Institute in Dana Point last year, is determined to continue to share his love of the ocean predators with students and educators. "This is a unique opportunity to show off real science in real time," says Stetson.

Broadcasting from the middle of the Pacific is challenging. "It seemed as close to impossible as I could imagine," says Stockert. "It's like stepping back in time to 1993, before you could stream video on the Internet." But with three months of testing and re-configuring, Stockert found the right settings and delivered 6 broadcasts of varying lengths.

With the on-camera talents of shark researcher, Dr. Mikki McComb-Kobza, viewers were able to descend 20 feet into a shark cage secured to the aft deck of the "Nautilus Belle Amie" and get a glimpse of Dr. Mikki measuring sharks and answering questions. Up to five sharks ranging in size from eleven to fourteen feet long made guest appearances during the live-streams on October 17th and 18th, 2016.

"This project is so close to my heart and seeing this happen is a dream come true," says Dan Stetson. "White sharks are elegant and powerful and we know so little about them. Our goal is to bring as many students and teachers into the ocean with sharks as we can – so that we all learn to care about them and protect them."

The next live broadcasts are being planned for Spring 2017, which will possibly include locally produced broadcasts from the kelp.
