See Gone With the Wind in Harrodsburg

The book was written over 80 years ago; the movie filmed over 75 years ago – yet Gone with the Wind remains one of the most enduring and beloved stories of all time. For its spring production, Harrodsburg's award-winning Ragged Edge Community Theatre takes an affectionate look at David O. Selznic, the legendary producer of one of filmdom's true classics, in "Moonlight and Magnolias." The show, called "a Hollywood dream-factory farce," takes place April 21-23 and 28-30.

As 1939 Hollywood buzzes with Gone With the Wind fever, Selznick shuts down production on his Civil War epic because the screenplay simply doesn't work. What follows is a behind-closed-doors over-the-top comedy as the movie's producer, formidable director and famous screenwriter hash out a screenplay over five days and on a diet of peanuts and bananas for the movie that would earn 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. 859/734-2389, www.RaggedEdgeTheatre.org

Famed music festival returns to Harrodsburg

Spend the weekend with world-acclaimed musicians from New York's Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center during the Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass, May 27 and 28, at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Now in its 11th year, the festival is conducted by CMS artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han and takes place in the Meeting House and the Meadow View Barn.

Chamber music enthusiasts will also enjoy two educational lectures led by Patrick Castillo that will thoroughly cover the history of each piece of music being performed. Exclusive Patron Events feature opportunities to meet the artists throughout the weekend. Visit https://shakervillageky.org/chamber-music-festival-patron to learn about patron levels and benefits.

Venue seating is limited and visitors should purchase tickets as early as possible; in fact, Concerts I and III are already sold out. Concerts II and IV take place in the Meadow View Barn. Visit https://shakervillageky.org/event/chamber-music-festival-bluegrass for details and tickets.

Harrodsburg has lots of new attractions in 2017

Besides sampling bourbon, music and theatre, plan a weekend getaway to include a visit to Harrodsburg's new Lemons Mill Brewery – the first tavern or taproom in the area since before the 1920s, now on Kentucky's Brewgrass Trail – and Olde Towne Distillery, the first distillery in the U.S. to produce hemp moonshine. Head downtown to see what's new, including the High Mountain Steakhouse with its nightly specials and new retail, including the Lazy A Furnishings Antique Shop and Rosewood, where you can browse for primitives and take a class in furniture painting and more.

New lodging in Harrodsburg includes the private and peaceful Glenriver Cottage and the 120-acre Blackhorse Bed & Barn, in addition to well-known The Inn at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Beaumont Inn and Bright Leaf Golf Resort. Plan your visit at www.HarrodsburgKy.com.
