Sitar was proliferated into the 16th and 17th century however it got its present form in the 18th century. It is said to be developed in the Mughal period. In that time, the famous musicians used to play the Sitar in mugal darbars. If we believe the documents and 'Sangeet Sudarshan then' then Amir Khusro is said to be the inventor of Sitar. Sources say that he had taken the inspiration of making Sitar from a Persian instrument 'Sehtar'. Some also say that it is derived the Saraswati Veena.

It's structure

It is a stringed instrument which has two types; one is "Ravi Shankar Style" (Kharaj-Pancham) and the other one is "Vilayat Khan Style" (Gandhar-Pancham). Different music styles are played on both.
