Pair of Victorian sterling silver centerpiece compotes. Made by George Fox in London in 1868.
Each: Neptune holds his trident in his right hand and shoulders a vase with his left.
The right foot is firmly planted while the left rests on a dolphin that wraps around his leg. A forceful bearded nude with adroitly placed ribbon of drapery. Mounted to vase is round and shallow bowl with crimped rim. The figure stands on double-domed base.
Chased scrolls and shells with embedded faces on bowl and base – dynamic ornament suggestive of foamy, rolling waves. Bowl underside has scrolled frames (vacant). Striking vessels for holding fruits or fruits de mer. Hallmarked. Good with deep period patina.
