Follow on Google News | Trace Creek Construction Completes Boyd County Middle School RenovationKentucky construction firm Trace Creek has completed a two-year, multimillion-dollar renovation of Boyd County Middle School in Ashland
The existing school was built in 1976. Its design and layout were outdated, and its electrical systems and wiring were unable to support the demands of 21st-century computer and information connectivity. Renovations were extensive and involved a number of upgrades, repairs and additions. The foundation on two sides of the gymnasium was previously found to be faulty (though not dangerous) by structural engineers. The flaw had caused the gym's walls on the two affected sides to lean outward, creating a gap between the walls and floor. Workers erected temporary walls to protect the hardwood floor from temperature fluctuations and humidity while the foundation was repaired and the walls were replaced. The gym also received a new roof, a fresh coat of paint, new bleachers, and LED lighting to replace the original fixtures, which were dim and inefficient. The new walls contain insulation that is up to current codes so it will cost less to heat and cool the structure. With its 5,000-seat capacity, the school's gym is the largest in the area and hosts varsity basketball games. The administrative offices were moved from the center of the school to the front, and new security vestibules now channel visitors to the reception area. The former library was moved to the space left vacant by the administration complex and now serves as a media center, which is encased in glass walls to allow for transparency and light flow. Windows have been added to classrooms with outside walls to allow more natural light to enter the building so there is less reliance on interior lighting. All classrooms were reconfigured to allow each a separate entrance into a hallway. The kitchen, cafeteria and all restrooms were renovated. The entire structure received a new roof, a new heating and air conditioning system, and upgraded wiring. New water lines were installed to correct problems with low water pressure. Finally, all parking lots were resurfaced to allow for proper water drainage, and traffic patterns were reconfigured to enhance bus and car traffic flow and safety. "Many people, including students, teachers and parents, have commented positively on the design of the new school," said Trace Creek CEO Sam Howard. "They like it, and everyone seems excited to experience a new beginning in a fresh, revamped space." "This project was meticulously designed, planned and prepared for," continued Howard. "It went off without a hitch. We are very pleased with the results, and we are honored to have taken part in a school renovation that will help students remain competitive and prepare for high school, college and careers."
