VANCEBURG, Ky. - July 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Trace Creek Construction, a general contracting firm located in Vanceburg, has completed construction of the new Nicholas County Elementary School in association with award-winning architectural firm G. Scott and Associates Architects, designer of numerous schools around the state. The new school, located in Carlisle, opened to students for the 2017/2018 school year.

The $19.4-million-dollar project featured construction of a new 75,000-square-foot school using masonry block and brick, structural steel and joists, aluminum storefront entries, and aluminum curtain walls to provide classrooms, administrative offices, a gymnasium with a stage, a cafeteria and kitchen, a media center, and an outdoor amphitheater with cast-in-place concrete seating.

The two-story building has an elevator and stairs with decorative glass-panel railings. Many areas, such as the cafeteria, music room, and hallways, feature floor-to-ceiling glass panels that allow natural light to flood interior spaces.

In addition to the new school building, Trace Creek oversaw the construction of parking lots, student drop-off areas, and sidewalks. This project will also entail demolition of the original elementary school, located a short distance from the newly constructed one, by September 2018.

One of the challenges in completing this complex project was coordinating construction work and material deliveries to minimize disruptions to the daily activities of students, teachers, staff, and parents at the nearby existing school, which was in full operation during the construction process. Limiting construction noise and traffic was an especially high priority during designated school testing times.

Another challenge at the jobsite was that a soil inspection team discovered the existing soil was unsuitable to support a foundation. Fortunately, suitable soil was found elsewhere on the property and transported to the site.

"It's always a pleasure to be involved in building or renovating a school," said Trace Creek President David West. "This is where the engineers, doctors, teachers, and leaders of tomorrow receive their roots of learning. It's where children decide that education is invaluable."
