TORONTO - Aug. 20, 2018 - PRLog -- Manufacturers of tube and pipe deal with challenges on a daily basis to produce quality product.  Modern trends in the tube and pipe industry have been to produce thinner-walled pipe with higher-strength steel.  As such the forming of the lighter sections can lead to forming difficulties. As the sheet material, or skelp, becomes thinner, its bending stiffness decreases, increasing the occurrence of edge instabilities that can reduce the overall weld quality.

Preparing the edges of the strip  before it enters the ERW area makes a big difference in the quality of the final tube or pipe.  The characteristics of current flow in the Vee area are affected by the skelp edges.  Irregularities such as shear stringers, rough face, etc, may produce weld defects.  The irregular surface may also cause the current to arc from one side to the next thereby impacting weld integrity.

Invisual E Inc. has developed a monitoring system that detects in real-time skelp edge conditions that can cause weld defects.

Our client had a requirement for the a real time skelp edge monitoring system.  This was necessitated by the need for better quality control measures and reliability of the welded pipe.  It was also inherently understood by the production that skelp edge affects the quality of the weld as defined in the background section.  The project objectives were therefore defined as follows:

1. To provide a real time operator tool for the qualitative indication of skelp edge.

2. To measure key characteristics of the skelp

3. To provide a competitive level of confidence to the clients of our client is implementing quantitative tools that identify problems.

4. To provide a data repository for traceability both for upstream supply chain and the downstream client

5. To measure tool wear properly against qualitative parameters.

Client reference :

Dear Mr. Huot,

We had a requirement for skelp edge inspection which was mandated by our main customer.  The key requirements were to measure properly the width, thickness, edge burr, edge squareness.

The secondary mandate was data storage retrieval repository for traceability.  Invisual E. has  been successful in the realization of this project and the client has accepted the application and system as part of our QA procedures.

This has enabled us to maintain our client / vendor relationship, and remain competitive in the pipe industry.

I endorse the capabilities of Invisual E.  for the successful realization of such applications in the tube and pipe industry.
