Noted author delivers message of triumph of the human spirit to students at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High SchoolOn September 10, 2019, as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School in Spring Hill, Florida, noted author Roslyn Franken, shared with over 325 students, teachers and principals the inspirational story of her book, Meant to Be, about how her mother survived the concentration camps in Nazi Europe while her father survived the Nagasaki atomic bomb as a Prisoner of War in Japan.
With rising hate crimes and school shootings in America, Roslyn's inspirational message of hope and harmony over hate and triumph over tragedy needs to be heard by young people, now more than ever. Roslyn's 2018 presentation in Parkland, Florida for the class that was shot into by the gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School launched her School Speaking tour. Roslyn's parents' story is about survival and strength of the human spirit in the face of hate and hardship. It's an important story for students to hear because as Roslyn says, "For many students today, just getting through a typical school day is a matter of survival." Faced with bullying, prejudice and discrimination for any multitude of reasons such as one's appearance, ethnic group, race, religion, or anything else that differentiates one student from the others, many students live with fear and alienation on a daily basis. By telling students about what happened to her parents in the past, Roslyn hopes students will better take to heart the dangers of today's rising prejudice and discrimination and what this kind of hate and evil can lead to if we don't stop it. Roslyn tells a beautiful, inspirational story of her family and it will be a great opportunity to have her at your school, as well," said Camille Jowanna, Principal at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School. Roslyn's parents' story was the subject of a CBC Gemini award-nominated television documentary and a feature-length movie adaptation of her book, Meant to Be: A True Story of Might, Miracles and Triumph of the Human Spirit, is currently in development.
