By: La Jolla Montessori School "Since May, our private school in La Jolla has employed all CDC and San Diego County Health Department mandated protocols to ensure safety at every turn," says Kelly McFarland, M.Ed., Director of La Jolla Montessori School. "Based on our success during the past three months of implementing safety protocols, our school has been shown to be a safe space for both our students and staff." Safety Protocols "Here are some of our initiatives," • An EPA approved 'fogger' is used to spray down each room every day after class • Masks are mandatory for all staff and children two and up • Tables, nap beds and circle time distances have been placed far away from each other • Since the school has a large outdoor and playground area, some classes are outside • Students wash their hands EVERY 45 minutes • Montessori classrooms and ALL materials are disinfected throughout each day • Lunches and snacks are brought from home. Why Staying in School is Important "Here are two reasons why staying in school is important for toddlers and preschoolers-- social interaction and peer learning," McFarland says. "Kids need to be with other kids to develop socially. Age-grouped peer learning is a Montessori concept and designed to show younger children 'how to do things' from older children." The Montessori Method is based on individualized learning, making choices, taking your time to succeed and developing confidence with each new task. "Learning 'on-site and live' while employing educated, experienced Montessori classroom teachers in a low student-to-teacher setting with ample indoor and outdoor spacing is a key bonus going forward," she said. "Our extensive safety protocols and precautions— Summation La Jolla Montessori School offers both a virtual and in-person tour to see the school using safety protocols.
