SAN DIEGO - June 14, 2023 - PRLog -- Global Warming has become a household conversation and it is crucial for everyone to do their part to help save the planet. Lifetime Montessori School (LMS), a local private school in Santaluz, California, guides young preschoolers beginning at eighteen months old to practice water and energy conservation at school and at home.

To introduce water and energy-saving principles to preschoolers, LMS takes a creative and fun approach by teaching children where water and energy come from and how to consume them with as little waste as possible. "One of our lessons revolves around the water cycle and how important it is to protect and take care of our water supply and the earth in general." Says Kristin Edwards, Director of LMS. "Part of this lesson includes a little geography, topography, oceanography, health and wellness, gardening and planting, as well as general discussions about the weather and climate. Recently, we ran an experiment to show the importance of drinking clean and safe water where each child poured a glass of clean drinking water. The teacher tainted a glass of water with black paint and went up to each child's glass and poured a little bit of it into each child's glass. The result was a murky glass that they were all disgusted by.  The children quickly got the point of what contaminated water which spurred the discussion on how to preserve our water supply."

Teaching them early about conserving water and energy helps them become aware.

Water and Energy-Saving Checklist for Kids

Once your child is excited about practicing water and energy conservation, set out a daily checklist for them by including the following:
  • Lights out! Use natural light
  • Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth
  • Take a short shower instead of a full bath
  • Use only full loads when using the dishwasher and washer
  • Use a water thermos instead of buying single-use plastic water bottles
  • Collect water used for rinsing fruit and veggies in the kitchen sink and water your plants with it
  • Unplug all electronics when not in use
  • Get outdoors!
Children love to be involved in daily home activities. Make it a game for kids to help them be more engaged with saving our planet. Providing them with a checklist will entice them to be ready to participate in conserving energy from a young age.
