WASHINGTON - Jan. 22, 2021 - PRLog -- MahoganyBooks along with 12 other bookstores nationwide will participate in a special virtual book event featuring actress, lecturer, activist, and now author Cicely Tyson. Editorial director Tracy Sherrod of Amistad HarpersCollins, the oldest U.S. publisher dedicated to multicultural voices, and Well-Read Black Girl founder Glory Edim are also participating in the event. "MahoganyBooks is about bringing empowered, insightful and intellectual voices of the African diaspora to our readers," stated Co-Founder and Co-Owner Ramunda Young. "In her 9th decade, Cicely Tyson is an American treasure, and it is an honor to hear her pearls of wisdom about love, life and history as an African American woman. This will be an unforgettable event."

From her starring role on Broadway in "The Blacks" (1961), to the Emmy-nominated 1999 HBO film "A Lesson Before Dying", Cicely Tyson's work has garnered critical and commercial applause for more than sixty years. Her two Emmys for "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" made her the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress. In 2013, Ms. Tyson won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a play for her performance as Miss Carrie Watts in "The Trip to Bountiful". A capstone achievement came in 2018, when she became the first Black woman to receive an honorary Oscar. The Board of Governors voted unanimously to honor her with the award, which came 45 years after her Academy Award nominated performance in "Sounder".

Known for her passionate opinions and edgy flair, Whoopi Goldberg is an award-winning comedian, actress and human rights advocate, as well as the longtime host of the daytime talk show "The View." Goldberg had her first big film starring role in "The Color Purple" (1985). She received much critical acclaim, and an Oscar nomination for her role and became a major star as a result. Goldberg is also known for being among a very small group of celebrities who've achieved "EGOT" status, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
