Canada Dental Network- What is Periodontal Disease?

TORONTO - June 1, 2021 - PRLog -- This is also referred to as gum disease. Which is the inflammation of the gum line that surrounds the teeth. Peri is derived from the word "around" and the word odontal is referring to teeth, which is how the term periodontal disease was named. If you catch this in its early stages, the only affected area is the gums. However, if it is not caught and not delt with, it will progress to all of the supporting tissues that hold your teeth in place. Periodontal disease has three stages:

-it begins with Gingivitis
-then moves to Periodontitis
-and lastly, advanced periodontitis

When you have the first stage, gingivitis, you will notice that your gums are swollen and red. They can also easily bleed from brushing your teeth. However, we want to note that it can be normal for gums to bleed when brushing your teeth and this symptom alone, does not mean you have gingivitis. If you do, in fact, have gingivitis and it progresses to the next stage, you will see your gums starting to pull away from your teeth which allows pockets to form between your teeth and gums. Food, bacteria, and other things can then collect in these pockets and get infected. When this happens, the bacteria releases toxins which trigger the enzymes in your body to fight off the infection. But this will actually cause the bone and tissue to degrade. As it progresses and becomes much worse, even more bone and tissue will be destroyed and you will start losing your teeth.
