Mary Casella named inaugural Daphne Zepos Research Award recipient for 2021

NEW YORK - July 1, 2021 - PRLog -- The Daphne Zepos Teaching Endowment is announcing on July 1, 2021 that Mary Casella has been named the recipient of their new cheese scholarship the Daphne Zepos Research Award. The award amount is $2,500. Mary is a cheesemonger living in Brooklyn, NY. Her research project will be centered around the role of women in cheese and diary. Since entering the cheese world she has been inspired by the women in the industry. Her goal is to produce a publication on the vital role that women have played in dairy and cheesemaking all over the world. She will debut her findings in 2022.

The Daphne Zepos Research Award (DZRA) is a new annual scholarship awarded to a food industry professional to further their learning—and their ability to educate others—about cheese. Recipients use the award to research a topic with cheese as part of the central topic. The goal is to produce a piece of media that can be used to further education and understanding about cheese.

To apply, candidates write a brief vision describing what will happen because they earned this award. The award requires that the person have worked in some part of the food industry for three years.

About the Daphne Zepos Teaching Endowment

The endowment is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that funds the annual award. Hundreds of donors have helped make it possible. All the proceeds go towards the annual scholarship.

About Daphne

The DZTE, and the awards it funds, is named in honor of Daphne Zepos, one of America's most inspiring cheese teachers. Daphne lectured, moderated, and presented at the American Cheese Society's Annual Conference. She taught at Slow Food's bi-annual Cheese in Bra, Italy, at the College of Marin, and at courses throughout the country. Daphne passed away in San Francisco in the summer of 2012.
