SAN DIEGO - May 4, 2022 - PRLog -- As state and federal funding works its way towards starting formalized public school programs at age four rather than five, a local educator says that's a good start and shares the core benefits of preschool.

"Programs that allow our youngest children to begin formal academic, social and emotional training are extremely beneficial for them," Kelly McFarland, M.Ed., and Director of La Jolla Montessori School, a private dual immersion program in San Diego, says. "Children see, hear, touch, feel and taste everything around them and absorb it all. They are quite capable of learning about their world and themselves as early as 18 months old. So, when I get asked 'Can a two year old go to school?' My response is, 'Absolutely! They can even start earlier!'"

Toddler and Primary Preschool Benefits

Developed six generations ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, building a 'whole child' uses a methodology based on:
  • developing children's self-worth by giving them respect and acceptance
  • granting them independence without interference
  • observing each child to find and build his or her strengths while determining areas for improvement and,
  • giving them the time to pursue what turns them on.
As a result, children shape who they are and their place in the world.

"Montessori philosophy is far different than a traditional preschool approach," McFarland says. "We are inside the cocoon of your child's personal academic, social and emotional growth by giving care, love and acceptance."

Dual Language Immersion

Beginning at 18 months and continuing through Kindergarten graduation three years later, each child at La Jolla Montessori School receives daily English and Spanish immersion. What starts as one-syllable words for 'dog, cat, red, green' and so on steadily progresses to grammar, syntax, sentences and speaking. By the end of Kindergarten, most students are fluent in two languages.

"At ten months of age, the human brain can understand and process any language. Language helps open neural pathways which allow the brain to better process logical subjects like math. And that means a more complex mindset."

Summary

Give your child the distinct advantage that only a Montessori child-centric preschool provides. Start their academic, social and emotional journey now. Then, watch in wonder as they morph from 'inside the cocoon' to 'the outside world.'
