Pockets Change Awarded Grant for Financial Resilience Project

Organization will work with Knology in three California cities

NEW YORK - Aug. 16, 2022 - PRLog -- Pockets Change, an organization that uses hip hop to build financial literacy and resilience among students, families, and educators, has received grant funding from the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) for a project developed in collaboration with Knology, a charitable non-profit social sciences research organization.

Pockets Change was one of twelve nonprofit organizations awarded funding through a government program called CalMoneySmart, which provides both in-person and virtual financial literacy education to unbanked and underbanked consumers all across California. Launched in 2019 with an initial budget of $4 million, the program has grown steadily since its introduction; in 2021-22, CalMoney Smart was allocated $10 million from the state's budget. The 2022-23 CalMoney Smart grantees will provide financial education across 27 counties within the state.

In its work with Pockets Change, Knology will help develop a series of embedded evaluation tools for assessing the effectiveness of financial literacy training programs. Embedded evaluation is a strategy to eliminate excessive testing of students, and is a more effective way of understanding learning achievements for children and teens. The project will begin in September, and will span classrooms in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Tulare.
