Empathy, Ethics, and Identity: Uniting Healthcare Professionals at Conference

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - May 31, 2023 - PRLog -- The "Confronting Ethical Dilemmas in Medicine during Genocide" conference on June 6, 2023, highlights remarkable contributions of healthcare professionals during the Holocaust and other genocides. This transformative event explores narratives of heroic nurses, doctors, and medical personnel who demonstrated acts of courage and compassion in the face of extreme adversity, providing insights into addressing ethical challenges in medicine today.

The conference brings together Healthcare professionals from Rwanda, Israel, and the tri-state region, including members of the Lancet Committee on Medicine and the Holocaust. By sharing their insights, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of acts of resilience exhibited by healthcare professionals during times of genocide and their relevance to contemporary medical challenges.

The event draws inspiration from forgotten names such as Luba Bielicka-Blum and Hadassah Rosensaft, who risked their lives to save others in the Warsaw Ghetto, Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, and other settings. Similarly, nurses in the aftermath of the Rwanda genocide struggled to heal the physical and psychological wounds of the victims.

The program features presentations by esteemed professionals, including Miriam Offer, Maria Ciesielska, Sarah E. Brown, Donatilla Mukamana, Anat Romem, Zvika Orr, and Hedy S. Wald. Their presentations will delve into the activities of female nurses and doctors in the Warsaw Ghetto, the history of female doctors in the Warsaw Ghetto, women healers during the Rwandan genocide, the role of nurses in the aftermath of the genocide, the inclusion of Holocaust and genocide studies in nursing education, and legacy of medicine and nursing during the Holocaust.

A Scholars Roundtable will facilitate in-depth discussions among participants. Esteemed scholars and professors from the Evelyn J. Spiro School of Nursing at Wagner College will engage in dialogue, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. This interactive session will enhance understanding, inspire further research, and promote action in addressing ethical dilemmas in medicine.

The conference and roundtable discussion will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom, enabling a global audience to participate.
