The tradition of mariachi music has its roots of origin in cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the ever-evolving genre's influence spread, it reached Chicago and birthed the Mariachi Herencia de México. Founded in 2016, Mariachi Herencia de México began as an ensemble of passionate Chicago students. Nuestra Herencia, their 2017 debut album, was the first major mariachi recording to be released by a U.S. student ensemble. It reached #2 Top Latin Album on iTunes and earned a Latin GRAMMY® nomination for "Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album," making it one of the most successful U.S. mariachi album releases in history. Following this success, Mariachi Herencia de México went on tour during the summer of 2017, performing at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center.

Their second album, Herencia de la Tierra Mía (2018), was produced by celebrated industry veteran Javier Limón and features guest vocals by folkloric/fusion artist Lila Downs and mariachi singer Aida Cuevas. 2019's Esencia was followed by a second volume, Esencia Vol. 2, issued in 2020. In 2022, the group performed a wildly successful North American tour.
