By: tbf Traffic As part of its commitment to worker safety, tbf Traffic is backing this campaign to raise awareness of the disturbing levels of abuse faced by roadworkers and other public-facing employees. According to Think Respect, 60% of roadworkers experience daily abuse, with over 2,300 incidents reported in the last 12 months alone. The true extent of this problem is believed to be significantly higher due to widespread under-reporting. "While we take every measure to seek justice, it's unacceptable that this happens at all." said Peter Ryland, Business Development Manager at tbf Traffic. "I've worked in the industry for decades and it has ever been the case that roadworkers are subject to everything from verbal abuse, to hurled bottles of urine, to being punched in the face." Darren Clark, Operations Director at tbf Traffic, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the wider implications of such behaviour: "Abusing roadworkers benefits nobody. It doesn't make traffic move faster – quite the opposite – and it does serious harm to people trying to earn an honest living. Remember that the people you see working on the roads are parents, sons, daughters, husbands and wives". In response to these alarming statistics, tbf Traffic has implemented several measures to protect its workers and combat this growing issue. These include equipping all operatives with body cameras, installing CCTV on appropriate sites, providing conflict resolution training, and fully supporting the prosecution of offenders. Additionally, tbf Traffic is committed to maintaining a continuous dialogue with clients, suppliers, and the public to keep this critical issue at the forefront. Respect Our Workforce week, organised by Think Respect in collaboration with National Highways, will also feature public engagements in Norwich, Cambridge, Bedford, and Peterborough to foster a change in public attitudes toward roadworkers and other public-facing professionals.
