Dec. 22, 2024 - PRLog -- In 2024, Busan made significant strides to establish itself as a premier MICE destination amid fierce competition among cities to host large events. The city's efforts in attracting international conferences, promoting ESG initiatives, improving networking, and showcasing its unique local identity yielded impressive results.

Busan hosted several major international conferences in 2024, marking its prominence in the global MICE scene. In July, the city welcomed the 45th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR 2024), drawing 2,700 scientists from 60 countries. This event was the first of its kind held in South Korea. In August, after eight years of preparation, Busan hosted the prestigious 37th International Geological Congress (IGC 2024) at BEXCO, a renowned event with a 146-year history. In November, Busan hosted the 5th Session of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5), which was attended by 193 institutions and countries, further cementing Busan's global status.

A key factor in Busan's success in attracting these events was its commitment to sustainability through strong ESG initiatives within the MICE sector. The city implemented eco-friendly practices, including recyclable materials and digital platforms to reduce waste. Recycling stations were set up, and carbon and greenhouse gas reduction indicators were used to track the environmental impact of each event. These efforts, supported by the Busan MICE Alliance (BMA), helped Busan secure the INC-5 conference and strengthen its reputation as a sustainable MICE destination.

Networking played a vital role in Busan's MICE growth in 2024. The Busan MICE Alliance (BMA) facilitated stronger communication within the industry through regular meetings and events like Busan MICE Alliance Day. This helped foster collaboration among members and explore joint marketing opportunities. New members were recruited, boosting both public and private sector cooperation. The launch of the Busan MICE Business Innovation Platform also enhanced accessibility to the latest news and resources for industry stakeholders.

Busan also leveraged its local identity to offer unique experiences at MICE events. With the trend of providing memorable experiences, the city showcased venues that highlighted its history and culture. Examples include Domoheon, the former residence of Busan's mayor; Space OneZ, a renovated warehouse; and Holi Lounge, which offers a surfing workation. These venues provide distinct experiences that reflect the essence of Busan, attracting MICE participants who seek more than just professional exchanges.

Looking ahead, Busan aims to continue its momentum as a MICE city. With events like the 18th World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM) scheduled for 2028, the city is on track for even greater achievements. The Busan Tourism Organization (BTO) CVB is actively working toward these goals, ensuring that Busan remains a sustainable, cooperative, and globally recognized MICE destination.
