The US EPA issues final rule to ban trichloroethylene in most uses within a one-year timeframe; with a longer phaseout period in some industrial uses.

GENEVA - Jan. 9, 2025 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 186.24 to summarize the final rule issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban trichloroethylene (TCE).

TCE was among the first ten chemicals reviewed by the EPA in 2016 under the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Typically, it has been widely used as a solvent across various industrial, commercial and consumer applications, including hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) production, vapor and aerosol degreasing, as well as in products like lubricants, greases, adhesives and sealants. However, it is now recognized as harmful to human health, animal welfare and the environment.

On December 17, 2024, the EPA issued its final rule mandating a ban on most uses of TCE within a one-year timeframe, with some extensions granted for specific industrial applications. Ultimately, the rule will lead to a comprehensive prohibition of all TCE uses.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to inform stakeholders about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 186.24 includes a table with timelines for the TCE ban, as well as the extended exemption periods applicable to the substance in specific uses.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 186.24 for more details.
