By: igus GmbH "Can't you automate this?" Many operators avoid regrooving tyres due to the effort and unpleasantness of using a sharp, heated blade. This issue led engineer Mark Berendsen to develop a semi-automatic solution, now honored with the green vector award by igus. Grooving profiles without effort The "Bear-Cut" machine, developed by Mark and Stephan Berendsen, automatically grooves tyre profiles specified by the operator on a display. It completes each groove in under 40 seconds with up to 110N of force and can perform precision tasks like cutting lateral grooves, assisted by a laser and two-hand control clutch. Task: finding the right energy chain Mark and Stephan Berendsen faced the challenge of safely guiding cables in the Bear-Cut machine, which moves in multiple dimensions. They needed a compact, robust solution and found it in the igus configurator, using the E2/000 and E2.1 chain series to ensure precise cable guidance and prevent contact between smaller cables and pneumatic hoses. Good ideas for further development Mark and Stephan Berendsen faced the challenge of safely guiding cables in the Bear-Cut machine, which moves in multiple dimensions. Regrooved tyres: triple benefit for budget and environment Regrooving truck tyres can save companies significant costs. For example, a company with 80 lorries can save €48,000 annually by extending tyre life by 25%. Regrooving also reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.5l/100km and CO2 emissions by up to 650kg per tyre, while the Bear-Cut machine uses minimal energy. Visit for more information: End
