Academy at Sisters Boarding School for Girls Win at Oregon State Envirothon

June 7, 2010 - PRLog -- The Academy at Sisters entered a team of students to compete in the 2010 Oregon State Envirothon.  The Oregon Envirothon is an annual competition open to schools throughout Oregon.  The Envirothon teaches students about the environment through hands-on field experiences that demonstrate knowledge of natural resources.  This year’s Envirothon environmental issue was “Protection of Groundwater Through Urban, Agricultural, and Environmental Planning”.

The Academy team trained and competed in the areas of Aquatic Ecology, Forest Ecology, Soils and Land Use, and Wildlife Ecology For the girls, the many hours of training paid off.  Out of 30 schools competing, the Academy’s team came in 1st in the Geocaching activity, 3rd  for their formal presentation and 9th place overall.

According to Jessie Russell, who helped facilitate the team, “Our students have gained so much from this experience.  I have seen an increase in their confidence as learners.  They believe they can prepare for anything they want to be a part of and come out successful.”  

Brittney, an Academy at Sisters team member, commented, “I didn’t know I could do this well.  This is the type of learning I need.”  

Despite a long and exhausting day, the girls had fun and were extremely proud of themselves.  They received accolades from the workers at the competition as well as from their co-competitors.
