Preferred Freezer Services Achieves Leed Gold

Aug. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Preferred Freezer Services (www.preferredfreezer.com), one of the largest Public Refrigerated Warehouse companies in North America, has been awarded LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Their design-build facility is located at 4500 West Ann Lurie Place, in Chicago, Illinois.  Ware Malcomb (www.waremalcomb.com), a leading design firm, designed this facility that temporarily houses frozen goods prior to redistribution for food processing.

Ware Malcomb Chicago provided architectural and interior design services, as well as USGBC processing for this 174,786 square foot cold storage freezer building.  The facility earned 40 LEED Certification credits and incorporates several sustainable design features including:
   Energy efficient HVAC system
   Highly reflective TPO roofing membrane to reduce energy demands
   Low flow plumbing fixtures
   Zero irrigation through the use of native species landscaping
   99.92% of construction waste was diverted from landfills
   43.9% of materials used in construction were regionally produced and manufactured
   Low VOC materials
   On site bicycle parking and shower facilities

The building has made great strides towards reducing the impacts of a freezer warehouse on the environment through the use of automated warehousing techniques, inclusion of a rail spur, and the utilization of the latest and most efficient refrigeration technology.

The cold storage freezer building has a 60 ft tall steel structure freezer with metal faced 6" insulated panel walls and a 9" insulated TPO white roof.  The freezer integrates a highly advanced system of automated robotic picking and retrieval technology into the structure, which facilitates fully automated product handling.  The 24,150 square foot pre-cast panel cold dock area has 17 dock doors.  The building also includes 7,719 square feet of support areas and 8,856 square feet of office, including private offices and testing areas for USDA inspections.  The facility is rail served by the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

The design-build project was constructed by Keeley Construction, Inc. of Villa Park, Illinois and developed by KTR Capital Partners of New York, New York.  Construction was completed in October 2009.
