By: W Gross Crane Beach, which was originally Crane Harbor is widely accepted as the most beautiful beach in Barbados, and has been listed in Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous as "one of the ten best beaches in the world". It was named after the huge crane which was installed to load and unload the ships, simply an idyllic picturesque beach. You will be able to see the oldest hotel on the Island The Crane Beach Hotel, Opened in 1867, on the cliff above the beach. The large waves make it a home to many water sports enthusiasts, including novice surfers, wind surfers and body boarders. There are many Types of Beaches on Barbados and It is not the case that all of Barbados coast is sand, you will find mangrove swamps, areas where beds of low lying coral rock, sandstone, clay or shale reach out to the sea, as well as cliffs and tidal pools. The swamps you will find in Chancery Lane Inch Marlow and Graeme Hall on the South and South West of the Island. They are the major wetlands of Barbados providing masses of plants and animals species, forming an important link in the food chain of offshore fish and birds. Low lying rock formations are particularly prevalent along the North East and South Easter points; crabs, periwinkles, sea anemones, and snails are in abundance along these rocks. In the South and South West Coasts where you will find many tide pools, which are an important ecological resource, acting as nurseries for juvenile fish and other common inhabitants of shell fish, like the ghost crab and sea roaches and marine plants like sea moss that is well known for the main ingredient of local health drinks. Tidal flats and wave ridges occur mostly off the East coast within eroded limestone plateaus and other low lying rock formations. Cliffs of coral and sandstone stand guard at calm bays and rugged coastlines and with frequent small, cozy soft sand beaches nestling between heads of coral sculptured by the sea. Nearly all of the larger cliffs are in the Northern parish of St. Lucy. Barbados is an island of coral and its beaches are made from finely ground coral. Few of the beaches are not fine sand. It is a safe bet that if there is a beach on the shore, it is beautiful sand. At Long Bay on the South West Coast you will find natural sand dunes. Barbados has given an abundance of potential for becoming a surfer's paradise. The island's location far out in the Atlantic Ocean allows waves to travel thousands of kilometers on the bottom of the sea to finally unload all the power it developed during it's long journey over Barbados' coral reefs. There are unlimited activities to occupy yourself with in Barbados, which is not surprising considering the island is almost one giant beach.
