Golfing in Almerimar, Spain

Dec. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Almerimar has two main features; the 27-hole, golf course and the brand new Golf Centre, the 3 dock yachting marine, one of the biggest in Spain. My villa is in an elevated position overlooking the golf course, the marina and the whole bay "Ensenada San Miguel". My villa is very close to the beach, marina, golf course and the shops, restaurants and bars. It has an exquisite panoramic view of the golf course, the marina and the blue Mediterranean Sea. My favourite restaurant is Club Nautico for its excellent cuisine and the stunning views of the marina and the control tower of traditional Moorish design.

Property development has been carefully controlled and there are no high-rise buildings. Most of the properties are in a traditional Moorish style. To the east is one of the world's largest wetlands and nature reserves, Punta Entinas Sabinar, where you can walk along the beach and around the lakes watching the pink flamingos and other exotic birds. The nature reserve is on the main migration route between Africa and Europe. There is a riding stable on the edge of the nature reserve and opportunities to explore the nature reserve on horseback. During the migration season very large flocks of birds eclipse the sun like clouds.

At the western end of the bay "Ensenada San Miguel" is the old castle "Guardias Viejas" where during June, July and August there are concerts late at night in the intimate setting of the courtyard bathed in moonlight. In August there are the “Creamfields” live concerts in Guardias Viejas. The bus services to the west serve the coastal towns and villages of Guardias Viejas, Balerma, Balanegra and Adra. There are also regular bus services to Granada, Malaga and Seville.

Further to the west are the mountains of the Sierra Nevada covered in snow and clearly visible from my terrace. The villa is only 1 hour 50 minutes away from the great "Sky Station" ski village resort at Pradollano (2100m) near Granada in the heart of the sunny Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is reached through breath-taking scenery on top class mountain motorways. The Ski resort has ski-runs going up to 3,300 metres altitude and a very attractive ski village with ample high quality accommodation at reasonable prices if you fancy staying over for a couple of nights. There is a fantastic view on top of the world overlooking Andalucía. Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada at 3842m is the highest mountain in mainland Spain and the Iberian Peninsula.

A short bus ride away is the Copo hypermarket with a Multi screen cinema and a Go Karting track. There is a tourist information centre there with a wealth of ideas for fun and adventure and most excursions can be arranged through Almerimar Resort Hotel. There is also the very large Hospital Poniente in case of emergency. You can take the bus into El Ejido, the nearest large town and one of the richest in Spain through the enormous fruit and vegetable growing industry in the Province of Almeria. The bus goes to the bus station opposite a brand new and very large El Corte Ingles department store. There are bus services connecting El Ejido to destinations all over Spain as well as services into the mountains to the white villages of the Alpujarras. El Ejido was a Roman settlement and there are archaeological remains in the town as well as in nearby Dalias and Berja. There is a bus service to the east for Roquetas De Mar, Aguadulce and Almeria. Roquetas de Mar is the adjacent seaside resort to the east of Almerimar the other side of the nature reserve and has the Mario Park water park and many bars and restaurants, entertainment at Castillo Santa Ana , the open air theatre, El Faro, the old lighthouse, the bullring and many other attractions. There are glass bottom boat trips from the port of Roquetas De mar. Aguadulce has a beautiful marina with restaurants and bars and the backdrop of the Sierra Gador mountain range. All these resorts on the Costa Almeria have beautiful beaches, safe for bathing and boating and attended by life guards. The all year round warm climate is second only to the Canary Islands.

Almeria is the capital city of Almeria province and only 30 Km. from Almerimar with a rich and very interesting history. Located on the Costa de Almeria, this vibrant city can trace back its history to pre-historic times. Throughout the centuries, many peoples have lived in the area, and left their mark – Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans. Almeria has a large port with ferries to Melilla and ports in Morocco and a cruise to Gibraltar. The Alcazabar or ancient fortress overlooks the city and the bay and is well worth a visit. The cathedral and other historic buildings are also very interesting. The Oasys Wild West theme park in Tabernas, the only desert in Europe is a very popular attraction. The Cabo De Gata natural park is also a big attraction including the old gold mine at Rodalquilar. A hire car is recommended to fully explore the Costa Almeria but there are buses and coach excursions as an alternative means of transport for your adventures.
