By: USSD Shaolin Temple’s representative, Wang Yumin, stated that he is “ashamed with [the former USSD executives] wrong doing" and that "greed, hatred and ignorance are the three poisons of human life. They will get the consequent result. I am sorry about their deed." Charles Mattera, a 10th degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo-style karate, founded Irvine, Calif.-based USSD in 1988. USSD grew to more than 170 studios in the U.S. and Canada. Mattera and USSD students have traveled to China several times as part of USSD’s pilgrimages to honor the Shaolin Temple and Great Master Shi Yongxin, the Temple Abbot. In 2000, the Abbot promoted Mattera to Grandmaster in Shaolin Kempo karate, and in 2005, a 13-foot-high monument in honor of USSD was dedicated at the Temple. Shaolin Temple will be expanding its World Shaolin Federation, designed to spread the word about Chinese martial arts and culture. Each continent will have a Federation branch. Wang Yumin stated that USSD will be the initial branch for North America. "We are extremely gratified that the Shaolin Temple and Abbot Shi Yongxin stand behind USSD," says Mattera. "It is unfortunate that people I trusted for so many years can be overcome with such greed and betrayal. We are seeking justice and we are confident we will prevail." USSD is being represented by attorneys A. Barry Cappello and Lawrence J. Conlan with the Santa Barbara law firm of Cappello & Noël LLP.
