March 26, 2011 - PRLog -- The Carrie Secrist Gallery of Chicago will present a new 30" x 44" work on paper, by Manhattan-based artist Melodie Provenzano at booth F-7 of the Dallas Art Fair, April 7 - April 10. Provenzano's new work on paper, entitled "Prayer Chimney", is precisely rendered in graphite, with accents of  gouache, acrylic and 24k gold leaf. The artist begins her process by setting up a still life of figurines and various objects, like drinking glasses, ribbons and plastic animals. The final arrangement is then observed and meticulously drawn from life.

"Prayer Chimney" features a porcelain figurine of a girl praying, balanced on the top of a tower of glasses, stacked upon an upside down glass vase that encases a porcelain shark. The artist explains that the shark housed in glass is a nod to Damien Hirst's piece "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living". Provenzano states, "Prayer Chimney is about the larger organizing principles of life."

Melodie Provenzano (b. 1974, Kinderhook, New York) received her BFA from the Parsons School of Design in 1996. She was recently included in Playing Around at the Brattleboro Museum, Brattleboro, VT and Champagne & Baloney at Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York. She is represented by Lyons Weir Gallery in New York.
