Sept. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture in partnership with Areytos Performance Works present Batey y Macorix: Senderos de Carbón/Carbon Pathways, an exploration of immigration and ethnic identity through traditional and contemporary music and dance. An extension of The Young Roots performance series, these exclusive two-night only performances are being held on September 30 and October 1, 2011 in the Repertory Theatre at the Hostos Community College located at 450 Grand Concourse Ave at 149th Street, Bronx, NY at 7:30pm.

The Young Roots performance series is an emerging artist showcase that highlights Afro-Latino traditions. The series is made possible through a Rockefeller Foundation grant, 2010-12 New York City Cultural Innovation Fund which supports innovation, creativity and art. Coupled with Areytos Performance Works, a dance theatre company that seamlessly integrates the worlds of performance art, Afro-Caribbean and contemporary dance; Batey y Macorix: Senderos de Carbón/Carbon Pathways, is able to celebrate the unique legacy of Afro-Dominican music, dance and identity. “This project reflects one of the most important encounters of the Afro-Latino Diaspora. We are extremely grateful to be working with the Rockefeller Foundation and Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture, whom both have a long history in the arts, education and understand how it continues to impact Hispanic heritage,” shared Sita Federick, co-founder and artistic director of Areytos Performance Works.

Under the artistic direction of celebrated choreographer Sita Frederick and produced by educator and community advocate, Leticia Peguero, Batey y Macorix: Senderos de Carbón/Carbon Pathways, explores how the convergence of gagá and guloya, two distinct Afro-Dominican musical and dance traditions, resonate and transcend today’s popular music and dance forms, most notably merengue. The term carbón refers to color, a poetic reference to exploration of Afro-Dominican identity and culture. Gagá and guloya were brought to the sugar belt region of San Pedro de Macoris, located in the Southwestern region of the Dominican Republic by Haitian and West Indian migrant laborers whom the North American sugar conglomerates began contracting to work in cane fields and factories in the early 1900’s. Gagá and guloya are performed in the streets of many bateys, the sugar worker’s settlement, and San Pedro de Macoris, representing their inimitable symbolic and spiritual journey.

The evening’s musical is led by award-winning composer and musical director Desmar Guevara, who is known in the industry for his expertise of Afro-Latino music. Special performances will include performances by Afro-Dominican folkloric dancer Genaro Ozuna, master drummer Alexander Callender and an original poem written by renowned novelist Nelly Rosario, author of Song of the Water Saints.
