By: Ashford Radio As a native of Long Island, born and raised, Renee Ortiz plans to run for Islip Town Council. For over fifteen years, she has exemplified extraordinary commitments towards Community Advocacy. Recently, she has begun a project called the Park Vision Tour, where she independently uses her personal time to visit all parks and pocket parks, in the town of Islip, to view and assess all current conditions, such as lighting and equipment issues. She also takes time to talk personally with residents about the safety of nearby parks and any negative recent activity that may have taken place. Ms. Ortiz practices being proactive and not reactive, and is certain that this method would be more effective for change. Her goal as Town Council, is to help people “take back their communities” Currently, she is in the process of proposing an Outreach Program for gangs. The program entails the assignment of a ‘Gang Prevention Specialist’, to each town or district, and they would work as a liaison for that area, working cooperatively with law enforcement, local agencies and other entities. Its sole purpose is simply to prevent the issue of “gangs”, before they begin.
