Retired Parade Floats – Where Do the Balloons Go?

Nov. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- There is perhaps no more spectacular or better-known display of balloons than the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Every year the classic, larger-than-life cartoons and holiday icons draw over two million people to New York from all over the world, enchanting kids and adults alike. And every year there are a few new additions to induct characters considered worthy of being reproduced seven stories high and gracefully carried through midtown Manhattan.

With new balloons added to the roster each year, there must come the retirement of those that have fallen out of favor. New York’s Thanksgiving Day parade began featuring balloons in 1927, and tastes have certainly changed over the last 84 years. Some of these retired former greats include the Tin Man from the Wizard of OZ, Shrek, famous wooden cowboy Howdy Doody, the Sinclair Oil Brontosaurus mascot, and the near-universally beloved Cat in the Hat (which was put down after knocking a street lamp into a woman and sending her into a coma for a month).

This is all well and good for the grownups, but what about the kids? Don’t you want to be ready with an explanation of why their favorite animated, green Ogre will never float overhead again? Now you can turn their frowns upside down with “Where Do the Balloons Go?” by Elena Davis. Gorgeously illustrated by Anna Jurinich, “Where Do the Balloons Go?” is a tale of magic and whimsy perfect for ages 4-8, telling the story of the balloon fairies, their city in the clouds, and the patching of wayward balloons. Right now, readers can find “Where Do the Balloons Go?” for just $14 at http://redrockpress.com/balloons.html. Contact Dan Kleinman at the information below for more information.
