March 10, 2012 - PRLog -- One of the Beatles classic songs, The Long and Winding Road, may perfectly describe Southern California racing veteran Rip Michels racing odyssey.  Michels and championship winning team Position One Motorsports are proud to announce that they have entered into a partnership agreement effective immediately where Michels will oversee the driver development program at Position One Motorsports as the new Competition Director.

Michels racing resume' is second to none dating back to his early days racing at the famed Saugus Speedway.  The 8-time NASCAR champion also stands out as the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale's all-time winningest driver and looks forward to being part of the Position One team. "Rip has a tradition of winning at many west coast tracks and that fits in with Position One's goals as we travel to new tracks in 2012," stated team owner Luis Martinez Sr. "We have new cars and state of the art equipment. With Rip joining the team he will enhance an already established winning formula at Position One."

Michels recently departed the Vision Airlines Racing (VAR) NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team where he served as Director of Competition.  Among his many duties, Michels oversaw the set-up, shock program and pull-down rig responsibilities for the last 18 months. VAR won 14 of 18 events at Irwindale in 2010 and culminated that feat by winning the season championship.  Michels also served as Team Engineer for the Michael Waltrip 2011 Daytona CWTS win.  "Working in Mooresville, NC on the truck team was an amazing learning experience," Michels offered.  "Having the opportunity to work with some great people and spending time at the wind-tunnel, shaker rig and pull down rig is knowledge I will use on the west coast with Position One."

Position One Motorsports goals for 2012 will be to further develop their winning tradition and become the premier West Coast team for developing championship caliber drivers. The team currently has a fleet of three ultra-competitive Late Model cars and two equally competitive Super Late Model entries ready for competition.  A brand new Late Model is the newest addition to the rental program, along with Rip's Toyota All-star Showdown winning Super Late Model entry. The team will compete at various west coast tracks in 2012 and their current schedule includes visits to The Bullring in Las Vegas, All American Speedway, Stockton 99 and Lake Havasu.

"Rip is a perfect fit for Position One and our driver development program," stated Position One Crew Chief Steve Boldrof.  "Rip has raced and won at many of the tracks on the west coast and will be bring that experience to our drivers. He also brings a wealth of set-up experience, sophistication and new technology from North Carolina to our shop."

Rip Michels and Position One Motorsports plan to compete at various tracks within the region in both Late Model and Super Late Model divisions during the 2012 racing season as well expand the driver development program. "It's no secret that Late Model, Super Late Model and Touring cars are my favorite racecars and to be back home in California with the Position One team is perfect," offered Michels.

Giving Thanks to a Hero
"Giving Thanks to a Hero" program honors servicemen/servicewomen and their families involved in the 10-year plus war on terrorism and the enormous sacrifices many of them have had to make in order to make this country safer, the Position One Motorsports team is hoping that the program will in some small way show that we are all appreciative of their sacrifices.

The program was the idea of Position One Motorsports team owner Luis Martinez Sr. "Veterans and their families have sacrificed much in order that we Americans can enjoy our lifestyle and freedoms and this is really just a small way that we can give back to them and say a heartfelt thank you," stated Martinez.
