Follow on Google News | May Day Special Cookie Treats for EntertainingBy: Red Rock Press Whether your May Day is an hours-long revel or a momentary nod to spring awakening, it's worth remembering that this is one of west's oldest holidays. Celtic in origin, it's still marked by children's maypole dances in Europe and the wearing of flower necklaces in Hawaii, where May Day is Lei Day. Grown- May wine is the perfect accompaniment for kebab cookies, sweet or savory, according to Kelly Cooper, author of newly-published Cookies for Grown-ups (Red Rock Press). Each cookie in this book is paired with a wine or another adult beverage. Ms. Cooper's savory or cocktail cookies are rooted in a tradition, possibly older than May Day, where bakers filled crackers or used them to sandwich whatever seasonal was left at hand---no distinguishing back then between sweet and savory in either "fast, " take-with-you food or sit-down banquets. Her savory kebab celebrates the spring vegetable, asparagus, while the sweet kebab highlights strawberries and Hawaiian pineapple and coconut. Ms. Cooper, who grew up in a fruit-rich California Valley, worked with Honolulu cookbook editor and museum consultant Clarke Reilly in readying Cookies for Grown-ups for publication. Both of Kelly Cooper's kebab cookies require skewers (each recipe yields two-dozen cookie-kebab skewers) but neither requires grilling. So you can enjoy these May Day treats even if it rains. ---- For more info, please contact Publicity@ End
