Follow on Google News | Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade Honors Our Nations Heroes on May 25Patriotism and revelry will again fill Chicago’s State Street this Memorial Day for the city’s annual parade celebrating the event.
The parade’s preceding wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Eternal Flame in Daley Plaza, assisted by former CIA Director and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta who will then serve as the grand marshal for the parade at noon. This year’s parade will honor the service men and women who have had to make sacrifices in the line of duty. Additionally, Chicago Gold Star Families — families in possession of a special Gold Star Lapel given to the immediate family of service members killed in action — will receive recognition of their own. Arriving early for the parade is a good idea, as the event attracts nearly 10,000 visitors every year. Plenty of uniformed marching bands from both the military and area high schools will be participating, as well as other patriotically themed parade staples. In other words, adults and children alike will have no trouble having a good time at the event, though the dignified and reflective nature of the wreath laying ceremony before the parade may not interest younger children.
