The 2014 Jeep Cherokee Earns Top Safety Rating From the IIHS

The latest edition of the Cherokee offers more than 70 different standard and available safety features, some of which are firsts for Chrysler Group vehicles.

The new parallel and perpendicular park assist feature is one of those firsts. When the turn signal is engaged, ultrasonic sensors are used to scan for available parking spaces that can accommodate a vehicle of the Cherokee’s size. When one is found, the system will alert the driver using the in-cluster display centre. The system also helps the driver parallel park or back into a perpendicular parking space. If a potential collision is detected, the system will warn the driver to apply the brakes. Parallel and perpendicular park assist is available on the Trailhawk and Limited trim levels.

To keep the Cherokee from drifting out of its lane, there is LaneSense lane departure. This system identifies and measures an automobile’s position inside their lane of traffic using a camera. If a vehicle drifts toward the edge of their lane without the use of their turn signal, the driver is alerted with a visual warning and steering wheel feedback. This system is also optional on the Trailhawk and Limited trims.

Drivers that opt for the Trailhawk or Limited 2014 Cherokee can also equip their vehicles with forward collision warning (FCW) with mitigation. This feature notes traffic-gap changes if Adaptive Cruise Control is not in use. If the system’s radar and video sensors identify a fast-closing object in front of the vehicle, it will pre-fill the brakes so that they are ready to be quickly engaged by the driver. If the risk is still present, FCW will provide audible and visual warnings as well as a short brake deployment.
