ASPEN Recognizes Top Nutrition Support Therapy Researchers

 
SILVER SPRING, Md. - Dec. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- As part of its mission to improve patient care by advancing the science and practice of clinical nutrition and metabolism, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) today announces its 2014 Research Award winners.

Since 1978, ASPEN has been recognizing excellence in research of nutrition support therapy and encouraging investigators through its research awards program.  The following awardees will be honored during ASPEN Clinical Nutrition Week conference in Savannah, Ga., January 18 to 21, 2014:

•  Jonathan E. Rhoads Lecture is ASPEN’s most prestigious award. The lecturer is recommended by the ASPEN Board of Directors and is invited by the president to deliver the lecture at Clinical Nutrition Week (CNW). The lecturer is recognized internationally for major contributions to the field of nutrition support therapy and has demonstrated a career-long commitment to improving the nutritional status of patients.

2014 Rhoads Lecturer: Gordon Jensen, MD, PhD, FASPEN, Professor and Head of Nutritional Sciences, Pennsylvania State University, and Professor of medicine at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, University Park, PA

•  The Stanley J. Dudrick Research Scholar Award is presented to mid-career investigators in recognition of past research accomplishments and future research potential in the field of nutrition and metabolic support. The award is made in honor of Dr. Dudrick and his research achievements leading to the dramatic development of total parenteral nutrition. The annual award provides the awardee with recognition and support for their future research, as well as the opportunity to plan the Dudrick Symposium at CNW.

2014 Dudrick Scholar: Carrie P. Earthman, PhD, RD, LD,H.T. Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor, Associate Professor of Nutrition, and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN

•  Research Workshop Travel Awards are given to the first authors of top-scoring abstracts that align with the CNW Research Workshop topic. The 2014 topic is entitled, “The Metabolic Basis of Cancer Nutrition Therapy.” The 2014 Research Workshop Travel Award Winners are:

•  The Best International Abstract Award is given for the top scoring, Original International Abstract accepted for presentation at the International Poster Showcase at CNW. This year, the Best International Abstract Award Winner is:
