ASPEN recognizes and presents awards to members who have contributed to the field by showcasing exceptional expertise in clinical practice, education and advocacy. The accomplishments of those selected for an award improved the quality and efficacy of the profession and their actions provide a positive example for healthcare professionals. Each award is given annually and recipients are recognized at Clinical Nutrition Week. "This year’s award winners are excellent examples of individuals who have dedicated their careers to advancing clinical nutrition and metabolism,” The Harry M. Vars Research Award—a tribute to Dr. Vars, this award is presented at Clinical Nutrition Week for the best scientific abstract submission. The winner is presented with an award at the Research Awards Ceremony and his or her paper is published in the Journal of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (JPEN). Winner: Carol Braunschweig, PhD, RD The Barney Sellers Public Policy Award—developed in honor of Barney Sellers, former ASPEN executive director, who had a tremendous impact on public policy and advocacy during his 15-year tenure. It is given annually to an ASPEN member who has significantly contributed to advancing our advocacy goals. Winner: Alan Parver, JD Excellence in Nutrition Support Education—recognizes a nutrition support educator’s excellence in the delivery of professional education. It is open to ASPEN members who have teaching responsibilities in an academic, community or other supervised training setting. Winner: Diana Mager, PhD, RD Stanley Serlick Award—sponsored by Hospira, Inc., recognizes a pharmacist who has made significant contributions to improving safe practices for parenteral nutrition through published literature, membership on national committees or task forces and/or presentations at regional and national meetings. Winner: Robert Poole, PharmD, FPPAG, FCSHP, FASHP The Lyn Howard Nutrition Support Consumer Advocacy Award—Developed in honor of Dr. Lyn Howard, this award is given to a patient/consumer, family member, or caregiver who has performed admirable activities and heroically advocated for others like themselves and their families. Winner: Ann Weaver Distinguished Nutrition Support Dietitian, Advanced Clinical Practice Award—ASPEN’s Dietetics Practice Section pays tribute to one dietitian member annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in leadership, practice and advancement of dietitians in the field of nutrition support therapy. Winner: Susan J. Carlson, MMSc, RD, CSP, LD, CNSC Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award—This award identifies and elevates the stature of interdisciplinary nutrition care within an institution or agency and externally in local communities. Clinical nutrition teams, as defined for this award, consist of an identified interdisciplinary group of practitioners with a member from each of four disciplines: o Cancer Treatment Centers of America o Truman Medical Center Distinguished Service Awards—These awards recognize ASPEN members who have made exceptional leadership and practice contributions that have furthered the vision and mission of the Society over a sustained period of time. Winners: o Nutrition Support Nurse Service Award, Carol McGinnis, DNP, RN, CNS, CNSC o Nutrition Support Pharmacist Service Award, Catherine Crill, PharmD, BCNSP o Nutrition Support Physician Service Award, Dan L. Waitzberg, MD, PhD o Nutrition Support International Service Award, Gil Hardy, PhD o Nutrition Support Dietitian Service Award, Kerry Stone, MS, RD, CNSC ASPEN Fellows ASPEN’s fellows program recognizes deserving ASPEN members for their dedication to clinical nutrition and metabolism.
