By: AABCP "We are seeing a steady decline in post mastectomy benefits for breast cancer survivors as well as fewer boutiques that provides these unique services. It became obvious that a different approach to protect post mastectomy services was necessary . The new mission of Support, Foster, Expand and Defend better defines the purpose of the Association," Currently there are approximately 5000 Certified Fitters in the United States. Post Mastectomy professionals are specially trained and nationally certified individuals. They measure and fit external breast prothetics restoring physiological symmetry to women and men after a mastectomy; usually as a result of breast cancer treatment. It is generally thought that all or most individuals who have had a mastectomy or breast amputation undergo immediate reconstruction, however depending on age and other non cancer related health concerns, over 50% of women do not have nor ever will have reconstructive surgery. However, without some type of "balancing", the body quickly begins to develp symptoms including back and neck pain, headache, spinal changes and more. This makes post mastectomy services not mearly an "asthetic concern" but a vital part of the healing process for a vast majority of women. For more information on post mastectomy services, insurance coverage or ways to help breast cancer survivors retain post mastectomy benefits, please contact AABCP at http://www.aabcp.org End
