By: Spitters Open Mic Poetry Spitters Open Mic Poetry was created by Sheila, a young entrepreneur born and raised in the Richmond Heights neighborhood of South Miami-Dade County. She is the host and owner of Spitters Open Mic Poetry since its conception and grand opening in August of 2012. She started Spitters Open Mic Poetry as a way to bring artists together, mainly poets and musicians. “I am very interested in Visual Poetry and the cultural phenomenon of the Open Mic, which is basically an invitation for speaking freedom. With open Mic any street poet can present his or her art to the public at large without previous judgement, without having to submit said work to Lit critics or without having to present a resume or an intellectual pedigree of any sort. Open Mic Poetry is a performance but a very honest one. The poet is simply out there in the open, in front of the audience speaking his/her heart out without restrictions. On the other hand, you have a guest artist that will paint whatever he or she feels about those words being said. My Spitters Open Mic Poetry events are powerful and passionate but always entertaining” Carlos Franco, Gallery Director concurred: “This event will be a visual poetry happening, in which at a given moment, the interpretation of words and emotions will be reflected in the images created by a visual artist. This type of urban cultural happening truly invites the community to experience the striking combination of two art forms in which the mixing of performing poetry and poetry slams integrates with visual arts. Sheila came to us while visiting Cauley Square, and we engage in a very interesting conversation leading to the creation of this event in our gallery. We are very happy to bring new artists to this place and to offer the community a different kind of entertainment” Admission to TC Gallery and Arts Center at Cauley Square is free.
