Announces the Teacher of the Week - Week 10 of the 2015 Titans SeasonBy: American Paper & Twine Co. “This week’s Teacher of the Week winner, shows us how children can be positively impacted at an early age through education and community service,” said Lonnie Spivak, American Paper & Twine eCommerce and Marketing Manager. “We had several entries on Mr. Baughman’s’ May Werthan Shayne Elementary school parent, Lillian Boeskool, nominated Mr. Baughman. “I am currently on our PTA board, and I happen to walk in on Mr. B's class often. You never know what you will find. From using a homemade catapult to teach about physics, to whatever instrument he has brought in that day to accompany their class song, to a microscope he made out of an iPhone (for their unit on malaria and mosquitoes, of course... which then becomes an awareness campaign for Malaria No More...). Lillian continues, “One of my favorite things he has done for our school is to introduce a Social-Emotional Learning aspect to the entire Kindergarten. Starting with his own class years ago, Mr. Baughman finds ways to have the students give back to others, while tying in Kindergarten Standards. My favorite project they do is to make lunches for the homeless. They begin by decorating a paper lunch bag. They carry this bag around to each classroom where they do different activities. They learn sequencing (first this bread, then the meat, then cheese, then the other piece of bread), they learn about the buoyancy of fruit in water (before packing a piece of fruit and a bottle of water). In the classroom where they pack five baby carrots in a bag, they first do an activity with counting blocks, learning the different ways you can make 5 (4+1, 2+3, 3+2, 1+4...). Along the way they learn about actual homelessness in our city.” I truly believe Joe Baughman is one of the best kept secrets in Metro Schools…” Each home game during the Titans’ season, submissions are reviewed to find exceptional teachers. The winning teachers receive a gift basket full of supplies for their classroom and two tickets to see a Tennessee Titans home game. A new winner is announced for every Tennessee Titans home game and at the end of the season a ‘Teacher of the Year’ is selected from the Teacher of the Week winners. This deserving teacher will receive an award, a deluxe gift basket of school supplies and tickets to the December 27th game vs. the Houston Texans.
