ILFORD, U.K. - Aug. 6, 2016 - PRLog -- Governed by the Sport & Recreation Alliance and enjoyed by the likes of Mo Farah, Beth Tweddle and Dame Kelly Holmes, WRS Resistance Sliding is a sport that involves and engages everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.

WRS has been a popular highlight for many years at numerous youth sports events including the London Youth Games and is regularly incorporated into school and charity programmes to promote social engagement amongst disabled children.

An Engaging and Adaptable Sport

WRS Resistance Sliding engages in an extremely effective way. The sport, governed by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, is completely adaptable, which means it is truly accessible to everyone. It is regularly used within enrichment schemes, school sports days, Paralympics events and one-to-one development programmes.

The WRS team has worked closely with various organisations, charities and special needs schools over several years to deliver a physical activity and competitive sports package that is fully inclusive for everyone. Marion Richardson School in London E1; Loxford School in Ilford, Essex; the Stepney Partnership; the Norwood School Unity Project, RedbridgeCVS and Vision Redbridge are just some of the establishments and organisations using WRS.

A Simple Idea for a Highly Beneficial Activity

Youth coach, sports club manager and fitness trainer Weininger Irwin, the UK's first TV Gladiator's champion, dreamt up the idea of resistance sliding in his East London living room when he saw his toddler pulling himself across the floor in a sliding fashion. Weininger's long sports and fitness background put him in the ideal position to develop the idea into something tangible, and it was not long before WRS was being widely recognised as something highly beneficial both as a sport and a conditioning regime.

WRS has the flexibility to be adapted in numerous ways to suit a wide range of special needs. Weininger says, "We regularly work with wheelchair users, visually impaired participants, children with Downs Syndrome, on the Autistic Spectrum and with learning difficulties and reduced mobility to make this something everyone can truly enjoy. In a nutshell, whatever it takes, we will innovate to make WRS accessible to all."

"Children of all abilities adore WRS", Weininger continues. "The feeling when they hit that buzzer and see their time flash up on the scoreboard is such a thrill, no matter how they got to the end of the course."

WRS can also be used to assist in achieving certain goals, such as boosting physical activity and encouraging a healthy weight, as was the case with the Vision Redbridge Active Stars programme.

Peter is a WRS enthusiast, as is his son who has cerebral palsy. He says, "When I got introduced to the discipline of resistance sliding training I must admit I wasn't totally bought on with the idea but I still decided to give it a try. My two boys were already exponents and would wax lyrical all day about it. Even my son who has cerebral palsy finds it excellent for strength building and a confidence booster. It's exciting!"

WRS Certified Training

Schools and clubs can take advantage of WRS certified training in how to tailor sliding packages for special needs. The experts deliver lessons on how to use WRS safely and to best effect so participants can get the most out of it, regardless of their particular requirements.

WRS sliding mats can be purchased for use in schools and the entire system complete with team WRS can be hired for events.
