Follow on Google News | Northeast Florida Safety Council Focuses Attention On Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14By: Northeast Florida Safety Council NEFSC offers fire prevention classes and fire extinguisher training for individuals and businesses at its facilities during the year. Call 904-399-3119 to find out about the course schedules. Home safety involves identifying potential hazards. Most home fires begin in the kitchen when ovens are left on unattended. Many bedroom fires are caused by poor maintenance of electrical devices, careless use of candles, smoking in bed and children playing with matches or lighters. The Safety Council offers a few basic fire safety tips for the home… · Install and maintain smoke alarms in sleeping areas; · Designate escape routes from each bedroom and practice them; · Teach everyone the "stop, drop and roll" technique if someone catches on fire; · Keep flammable items like bedding, clothes and curtains at least three feet away from portables heaters or lit candles; · Appliances and electric blankets should not be operated with frayed power cords; · Don't overload electrical outlets; · Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. NEFSC is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, public service organization dedicated to promoting good health, saving lives, preventing accidents and maintaining a safe environment through workplace safety programs, road safety training programs and community service. With four locations throughout the First Coast, NEFSC offers classroom safety courses in addition to online training.
