WASHINGTON - Nov. 28, 2017 - PRLog -- MahoganyBooks, an award-winning New York Times reporting bookstore that specializes in books written for, by or about people of the African Diaspora, is hosting a community conversation on why "Black Books Matter" on December 4th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:oo p.m. Hosted by Denise Rolark Barnes, Editor and Publisher of The Washington Informer Newspaper, the panel will include Chairman of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8A Troy Prestwood, Educator, Author and Founder of the East of the River Book Festival Dr. Courtney Davis, Duende District Founder and Owner Angela Marie Springs, and MahoganyBooks Founders and Owners Derrick and Ramunda Young. "Black Books Matters is about acknowledging and bringing to the forefront our stories and value as a people and the authors who give insight on the various experiences and perspectives within the African American culture," states MahoganyBooks co-founder Derrick Young.  "Without black books, the rich history of communities such as Anacostia might have been lost or forgotten."

Ramunda Young, co-founder of MahoganyBooks adds that "Reading is an essential component of success. Numerous studies outline the critical connection between reading skills and academic success and how it impacts professional and relationship outcomes.  Knowledge truly is within the pages of a book."

MahoganyBooks also features Duende District, a mobile bookstore whose focus is the large Hispanic and immigrant communities of color, as a long-term pop-up within the store. Their collaboration creates an inclusive literary environment for populations that are largely underrepresented in other literary institutions.

MahoganyBooks is the first book store in historic Anacostia in over two decades. To celebrate this milestone, a grand opening and community celebration will be held during Black History Month. Located at 1231 Good Hope Road, S.E. at the Anacostia Arts Center, the hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday thru Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Started in 2007 by husband and wife, Derrick and Ramunda Young, MahoganyBooks is the fastest growing online bookstore for people of the African Diaspora.  It has grown from being exclusively an online bookstore to being the go-to bookseller for community book events in the District, Maryland and Virginia. Over the years, MahoganyBooks has connected readers to writers for exciting and thought-provoking literary events with the likes of Misty Copeland, U.S. Representative John Lewis, Walter Mosley, Chimamanda Adichie, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and former Mayor Marion Barry among others.
