Follow on Google News | Joe Tirone Jr. Shares Storm Buyout Strategies at Scientific Conference December 2017Staten Island Board of Realtors 2018 President-Elect Joe Tirone will be a keynote speaker at the upcoming American Geophysical Union (AGU) National Meeting in New Orleans.
By: illumiNET Media Mr Tirone will present "Managed Retreat" in Response to Superstorm Sandy: The Oakwood Beach Story and highlight his experiences that led to a successful community buyout. River and coastal flooding remain the costliest natural hazard worldwide. Spiraling losses are driven by growing human population, expanding infrastructure, and climate change. Mitigating flood risk is an international priority. Investments in flood-control infrastructure and mitigation can be locally cost-effective, but for the most vulnerable communities, piecemeal solutions are inadequate. Among his last acts, President Obama instructed 11 federal agencies to develop a framework for "managed retreat" -- a policy for relocating entire towns threatened by climate-driven flooding and rising sea levels. Current targets include Isle de Jean Charles in the Louisiana Delta and the Alaska coastal village of Kivalina. Along US rivers, about a dozen towns over the past 150 years have undertaken wholesale relocations. Managed retreat – and broader resilience to flooding and climate-driven sea-level rise – requires rigorous interdisciplinary applied science, including in the earth and ocean sciences, climatology, hydrology, anthropology, and many other fields. The "Managed Retreat" panel is led by Nicholas Pinter, University of California Davis, and Christopher Dalbom, Tulane University. Our science is accurate, peer-reviewed, and well respected. The research conducted by AGU members encompasses everything from the exploration of the planets, to studies of the structure and chemical composition of the Earth's deep interior, to understanding the Earth's atmosphere and the causes of climate change. These are not only exciting scientific topics; they are also of great relevance to humankind. Visit: http://www.chbrokerage.com End
