Follow on Google News | Behind The Beat An Exclusive Interview With EDXBy: Mix 247 EDM Maurizio Colella, better known as EDX, had a prime-time slot on the Disco Inferno stage. EDX is Swiss-born but native to Italy. He's been DJing and traveling the world for over two decades and is signed by Spinnin' Records with numerous hit house and progressive house songs. The man is a legend and has quite the personality as well! We at Mix were lucky to sit down with him and pick his brain before his set: So you've been doing this thing for over two decades. Can you look back in time at one of the first club events or festivals you were performing at and think of what has changed? Do you still get nervous jitters at festivals or shows? I've played a lot of shows since my first, but the technology has definitely changed. We used to play with LPs and turntables, but in the meantime, we've moved to just an MP3 file and this is like the biggest change. At first, an artist would try to express himself with music from other talents or just music you liked combined with skills to change it a little. That evolved to an artist that isn't just a DJ but an artist with his own music, fans, and a proper following. I feel like the old school DJ from 20 to 25 years ago doesn't exist anymore. When I'm on stage, it's always something special. The moment when you're on stage and you play your first record you just dive into it and forget everything. I think every artist or DJ should have that special feeling to keep doing it and if you don't feel that then maybe it's time to do something different. What is your favorite song of 2018 and who are some DJs we should keep an eye out for? For the second half of 2018, I would definitely pick "No Place" by Rüfüs Du Sol. In my point of view, everything is perfect. On the DJ side, there's a lot of talent out there. I'm not usually able to talent scout because when I'm touring I go from one city to the next, I'm home for a couple of days, then I'm back on tour. Summer has been really crazy and I haven't put a lot of time into checking out new, fresh talents. On the production side, there are definitely a lot of great talents out there, but I'm still kind of waiting for something new. What's your creative process like in the studio? Do you decide to go to the studio one day and make a song or do you find inspiration on the road, at home, or somewhere else and work from that spot of inspiration? You know, the whole DJ thing comes with traveling and meeting a lot of people, new cultures, and new places. That's the main source of inspiration for myself. It always depends. Sometimes I'll hear a track and notice the lead melody could work with my music and I go to the studio and try to make something going off that idea but in the EDX world. Other times, I like to try and make something groovy and just start adding beats, sounds, and other elements. On the remix side, it's completely different. If you already have something out there and you get inspired by a vocal or composition from someone else, you kind of bounce back and forth until you get where you want to be with the record. At the end of the day, you always want the record to sound like your world, your own sound, but keep the original vibe of the record. There are always different ways to create and work with music. Rumor has it, you're a great cook. What is your favorite thing to cook? Do I have to say pizza because I'm Italian? [Lots of laughter] I'm very good with soups, vegetables, and fish. Sometimes barbecue even though it's not really cooking. Does pineapple belong on a pizza? In Italy that is illegal! EDX killed his set at the festival and hopefully managed to stay away from any pineapple pizza that came his way.
