Follow on Google News | Behind The Beat: Martin JensenBy: Mix 247 EDM Danish DJ and producer, Martin Jensen is known for his top hit "Solo Dance", which has received over 460 million Spotify streams. He also was recently placed #70 in DJMAG's Top 100 DJ's last year, along with the track hitting #1 in the UK and reaching multiple platinums in Norway and Denmark. Now, for the past two months, his recent hit "16 Steps" with singer, Olivia Holt has reached more momentum than we could ever expect! It's a great melodic summer tune to groove out to on a summer day, and even as we transition into more cold weather conditions. I had an incredible opportunity to talk with Martin Jensen himself about the success behind the latest track and how he works with his sound as an artist. Read our exclusive interview below: "16 Steps" is such a melodic, summer-filled track! Can you tell us the story behind the production? The production behind "16 Steps" is actually based on me traveling around the world and playing in nearly every continent. As you might know from my history, I've produced records in the style of tropical house and pop. I've produced songs like "All I Wanna Do", "Solo Dance "and "Middle Of The Night". For this track, I just felt that I wanted to try something new. I had this cool beat I was working on which was more in the hip-hop direction. My thought was that either I should go and search for a cool hip-hop feature or something completely different. I chose to go with a singer and instantly reached out to Olivia Holt to hear if there was any interest. I had just remixed her other song which is how we initially got in touch. She said yes to give the record a try and that's actually how "16 Steps" was born. What made Olivia Holt perfect for the single? Was there anything specific about her that really made her stand out? Olivia has a brilliant voice. It's high pitched, but not in the bad way at all. She sings clearly, and her melodies are amazing. My experience with her has been nothing but great, both on the remix but also on "16 Steps". Do you have any fun or memorable moments from the set of the "16 Steps" music video? Yeah definitely. It was 2 busy days with a lot of work. The funny thing for me was that Olivia's makeup team consisted of 5 people – I had 1 person! She had 30 dresses with her and I had 2 black t-shirts! It was super fun seeing the difference between her and me in that sense. Your single "Solo Dance" is now certified 8x platinum in Sweden! Why do you think the song has had such an impact on fans? It's actually not only in Sweden – Norway, and Denmark has gone multiple platinum! Several other countries have platinum as well. It's so amazing to see how much support "Solo Dance" has gotten. I'm really glad it's still being played, but what I'm most excited about is the fact that I can continue to bring out new music for all you guys. Can you describe your mindset when you found out "Solo Dance" had hit the #1 spot in the UK charts? That's a great question. It was a funny moment because I had a 14 date US tour scheduled and was having a meeting with our American label. I was telling them about the success of the record in the UK and was asking if we could push it more in America. They said sure, let's do it, and at that time it was #130 on the top 200 on Spotify. We later ended up with a top 50 record in the world and I got to play the Capitol Records show at Wembley Stadium. The experiences I had during that time would've never been possible without "Solo Dance"! When it comes to genres specifically, do you like to produce happy and emotional tracks or do you like to just go with the flow? I like the happy vibe but most importantly giving people whichever emotion it is that I want to convey in my tracks. I want people to be able to relate to my songs. "Solo Dance" was about going on the dance floor, "Wait" was about waiting for your love to come around and "16 Steps" is about this horrible relationship where you can't stay apart from each other. So I'd say emotional songs everyone can relate to! Any upcoming new music/shows that we should look out for? I've got a new EP coming during the Amsterdam Dance Event. It'll be five tracks! Then I've got a new more commercial single coming as well. So much new music that I can't wait to show you! You should go on Spotify and follow me to be the first to hear these records. If you had a million dollars to give to charity, who would you give it to and why? Charity to me is an important thing. I've been searching for the 'right' fit for me as I feel it's a very personal thing to devote yourself to. I haven't been able to find exactly my right fit yet, but if I had to choose a charity at the moment then it would be towards cancer research. Otherwise, a music institution would be a great match.
