GURGAON, India - Dec. 27, 2018 - PRLog -- Stenosis refers to a medical condition marked by a blockage in the pathways of the blood flowing in our body. caused by the accumulation of plaque which is made up of unwanted salts, fats and cholesterol particles. The human heart is divided into four chambers each of which are divided by the four valves namely aortic valve, pulmonary valve, mitral valve and tricuspid valve. The normal functioning of the valves is extremely important for guaranteeing the continuous flow of blood from the heart. Different valves perform different functions which regulate the normal working of the heart. The mitral valve is responsible for the flow of blood from the atria to the ventricles. However, sometimes the valve might get blocked due to the deposition of unwanted impurities in our blood, leading to mitral valve stenosis.

Symptoms of mitral valve stenosis are not usually easily detectable. It might take years for these to get prominent. The various symptoms of mitral valve stenosis include shortness of breath (difficulty in breathing), fatigue, general body weakness, inflammation and swelling in the limbs, palpitations, fainting and pain and discomfort in the chest. Such symptoms may become worse if the heart rate of the patient increases, hereby patients suffering from mitral valve stenosis have to limit their physical activities to a large extent. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is better to consult a specialist as soon as possible. The specialist will conduct all the required tests to determine the adversity of the problem and decide which treatment option will suit you the best.

One of the most commonly used techniques used for treating mitral valve stenosis is Mitral balloon valvuloplasty, a procedure that involves the use of a catheter fixed with a balloon to widen the blocked mitral valve to restore the normal flow of blood. The procedure is done by making very small incisions near the groin or on the side of the chest through which the catheter (a flexible tube-like instrument) is introduced into one of the arteries and then carefully directed towards the affected valve. This is done using a microscopic camera that helps to generate the live images of the affected valve on a big screen. This helps the doctors to carry on with the treatment with more precision and accuracy. Once the catheter is in the right position, the balloon is inflated to exert pressure on the walls of the affected mitral valve and force it open, thereby, opening the blockage and restoring normal blood flow. Once the blockage has been removed, the balloon is deflated and removed along with the catheter via the same incision. The patient may be required to stay in the hospital for a day or two. Normal activities can be restored within 2 to 3 weeks.

Balloon valvuloplasty has a very high success rate and about 85 to 90 per cent of people undergoing the treatment have successful outcomes. Although the treatment does not ensure that the problem might not return back in future. It only relieves the patient of all the symptoms. The surgery may be needed to be repeated if the symptoms return back. As the procedure is minimally invasive, hence there are very fewer complications associated with it. Also, the recovery period is very short and there is minimal blood loss.

Although the surgery can give instant relief from the various symptoms, however, the success rate of the surgery greatly depends upon the patient as well. It is very important for the patient to follow all the instructions given by the doctor and take the medication on time. The patient is required to carry out a healthy lifestyle. Smoking and drinking should be avoided. Physiotherapy can help to speed up the process of recovery and also help the patient to cope up with the surgery. In case the symptoms return, immediately consult your doctor. Make sure you do not take the problem lightly and seek immediate treatment.

Mitral valve stenosis is just like any other type of stenosis and is marked by a blockage in the mitral valve owing mainly to the unwanted salt, cholesterol and fat particles that have the tendency to get deposited on the walls of the valve and created a hindrance against the free flow of blood. If not treated on time, the problem can lead to serious repercussions and even pose a grave threat to the patient's life. Mitral valve stenosis needs to be treated surgically. This can be done in two ways, either by the traditional open heart surgery or new minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty. The procedure is somewhat same as Aortic stenosis balloon valvuloplasty and is offered at all the leading heart hospitals in India. The advent of minimally invasive treatment procedures like percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty has brought about a revolution in medical history by making treatment possible for those patients who were considered ineligible for the traditional open heart surgery.
