Follow on Google News | The 2015 Ford Mustang will be Smaller and Lighter Than Previous ModelsThe changes should lead to improved fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
As part of its complete redesign, the 2015 Ford Mustang is expected to be at least 400 pounds lighter than the 2014 edition. This weight loss will come through a combination of a smaller overall size and the use of lighter-weight materials. It’s been reported by Edmunds that the 2015 Mustang will be about 8 inches shorter and 6.5 inches narrower than the 2014 model, and will also have less overhang all around. As far as materials, it’s expected that the 2015 Mustang will make use of more aluminum and improved structural engineering to allow for the use of less material overall. Shedding weight is about more than just using lighter materials — the way the vehicle is built is also a huge part of it. The loss of 400 pounds will be a significant reduction — the 2014 Mustang V6 coupe weighs 3,523 pounds when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. This configuration enables the 2014 Mustang to achieve 19 mpg city/31 mpg highway, so shedding that amount of weight should result in even stronger efficiency numbers. New regulations require automakers to increase the efficiency of their fleet by 4% each year through 2025. The 2015 Ford Mustang is expected to be unveiled at either the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January or the 2014 New York Auto Show in April, with the convertible model to be revealed separately. It’s expected to be available for purchase by the end of 2014.
